Indonesia, Lake Toba – Exploring the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia? Come visit Lake Toba. The lake which has an area of around 1130 km2 is regrettable to be passed when you visit North Sumatra. And there is an island in the middle of this lake called Samosir Island.
This lake is an image of a proud destination for Bataknese. Lake Toba, which is located on the northern part of Sumatra island, holds a lot of beauty. Dubbed as one of the new Bali destinations, Lake Toba feels ready to show off its hidden gems to the eyes of the world, just like Bali.
Located about 180 km or usually takes about 5-6 hours from the center of Medan, the trip to Lake Toba feels less satisfied if only spent 1 day. Transportation that can be used are Car and Motorbike. Car is highly recommended and suitable for this long journey.
Upon arrival in Parapat, I immediately prepared to cross to Samosir Island. This Ferry does not only carry passengers but also vehicles, both motorcycles, cars, even truck. Note the time-table of the Ferry crossing departure so that it won’t get too far and left behind. It costs IDR 9.000/person, Motorbike IDR 22.000 and Car IDR 135.000.
Finally arrived at Samosir Island! I directly explore this island. First stop is Batak Museum. The museum which is inside Rumah Bolon (Batak traditional house) holds a lot of historical relics of the Batak Toba tribe. Not only that, there are also traditional Batak clothes and this beautiful Ulos Cloth. After learning the history of Batak, I continually meet the statue of Si Gale Gale, a wooden statue used in dance performances for the funeral ceremony during the funeral rites.
The journey continues to surround the island, yes I literally circle this island and takes about 6 hours. The unexpected views found very valuable and worth it! I thought it would be very boring, but I was wrong. The traditional local life is still thick.
Starting from the activities of the fishermen on the edge of the lake who are fishing for fish to meet wild pigs crossing the road.
The trip has been increasingly uphill, unexpectedly what I found here is very lovely. I meet this cute little boy who was carrying a baby goats. I also took the time to say hello.
The more up the hill, the view offered is even more extraordinary. I completely wonderstruck by seeing the beauty of Lake Toba from the height on Samosir Island.
After surrounding the island, finally I took time to swim in this lake, my tired of this body along the twists and turns of the beauty of Samosir Island disappear instantly when I jumped into the lake. This clear and very cold water will refresh your mind. I can’t wait to get back here soon!!
I wish go there….
