It’s the school holidays and this time we brought the kids for a 3D2N trip to Desaru. There are several ways to get there :
- Driving – It’s about 2 hr drive from Singapore via Lebuhraya Senai-desaru/E22.
- Bus – Booking of bus tickets via travel agency
- Ferry – Changi Ferry Terminal to Tanjung Belungkor Ferry Terminal is around 30 minutes.
Since shopping in Johor might be an option after Desaru trip, we opted for self drive. We set off around 8am plus and with a bit of jam at the checkpoints , finally reach Sand & Sandals Desaru Resort and Spa at around 12pm. First impression of the resort was that security was good as the personnel at the car park entrance already has a list of incoming guests for the day. Upon stepping in the resort, the whole are well maintain, link to the swimming pool and beach. It also has a arcade games rooms for bigger kids and indoor playground for the little kids. To our pleasant surprise, early check-in can be done as well! This is how our room looks, quite spacious with a balcony.

Our 1st stop – Desaru Ostrich Farm
It’s about 1 hour drive from resort. At the entrance we bought tickets at RM15 per adult and RM10 per child. Corn kernels and vegetables for feeding the ostriches are at RM4. We were guided into the farm where their friendly staff gave a brief introduction on the ostriches and a demonstration on drilling open a ostrich egg. We were told that an ostrich egg is equivalent to 24 chicken eggs and can withstand around 120kg weight. The egg shell can be use to make ornamental lamps which can be bought at the farm’s souvenir shop. After which we tour around the farm to feed the ostriches both in enclosed fences and some docile ones walking around the farm. Kid had fun feeding and the full grown ostriches are quite strong when yanking off the leaves off the vegetables. Much to our amusement, one of the ostriches also try to tail kid as there is unfinished corn in kid’s hands.
Lunch at the farm restaurant , we ordered ostrich egg omelette (RM10) and tried a cake baked with ostrich eggs (RM16). Both taste good, very similar to chicken egg. There are also other food like ostrich satay, ostrich burger and even ostrich Bak Kut Teh on the menu. We took around an hour plus to finish the farm tour. Overall, a simple farm but great experience for the kids!
