Sarajevo | If you are thinking where you can have modern and historin one, Sarajevo is definitely the city that will take your breathe away. Did you know that Sarajevo has public lighting since 1895? Or that Sarajevo has plumbing even before that Vienna has? Well, that is only small piece of history that this city has to offer.
Along with the city you can follow the river, Miljacka. This is ideal atmosphere for long walks and chatting with your friends. There you can see many bridges such as : Latinska ćuprija, Festina lente, Careva ćuprija, Rimski most etc.
The best part of the city, my favorite part, is old town. The city retains a strong Muslim character, having many mosques, wooden houses with ornate interiors, and the ancient Turkish marketplace (the Baščaršija); much of the population is Muslim. The city principal mosque is Gazi Husreff Bey’s mosque. This mosque is built in 1530. There is also the museum and public bazar named by the same name. Along with the Baščaršija you have a few public water sources. Also there is a legend if you drink water for these water sources you will always come back in Sarajevo.
On Baščaršija you can find many small stores where you can buy traditional products, souvenirs but also taste delicious food. Walking around you can see that there are many turkish stores. That is perfect mix of Bosnian and Turkish tradition. You can taste delicious turkish baklava or kebab and you do not even have to go Turkey and all that finish with delicious Bosnian coffee. Basically, Sarajevo is place where you can try seriously delicious traditional food and be welcomed by friendly people. There are so much food to try from ćevapi to different types of pita that you will never be hungry.
Beside that part of the city you can enjoying in many shopping centers. I believe that Sarajevo is city that can give something for someone, all depends on what you are looking for. There are many shopping centers such as SCC, BBI center. Sarajevo has very good architecture where city is hugged with beautiful modern and traditional buildings.
If you are tired of walking around and want to see the whole city you have perfect places to enjoy. The Žuta tabija (Yellow Bastion) , which is located on the Jekovac cliff, which is why it is also known as the Jekovac bastion, is one of the fortifications that formed a defensive wall around the old town of Vratnik. After the burglary of Eugene of Savoy in 1697, it turned out that the small fortress, which was located on the site of today’s White Bastion, was not enough to defend the city, so the Bosnian governor Gazi Ahmed-pasha Rustempasic Skopljak in 1729 began building walls around Vratnik. At the ends of the defensive wall, 5 bastions were built, one of which is the Yellow Bastion, named after the yellow stone from which it was built. After the Austro-Hungarian conquest of Sarajevo, the fort lost its function. Today, Žuta tabija is a place with a fascinating view of Sarajevo.
(On the way to Yellow Bastion)
Trebević Cable Car was first built in 1959, and opened for the public on May 3, 1959. It had a capacity of 400 passengers per hour. However, the many years of operation and repairs took a toll on the cable car which resulted in serious problems, so much so that the relevant institutions forbade further repairs of the cable car. During war cable car was completely destroyed but it is reopened in 2018. This is a great way for relaxing driving and enjoying view on Sarajevo.
Sarajevo is the centre of a road network and has a rail connection to the Adriatic. Old craft trades, particularly metalware and carpet making, continue. Sarajevo was the site for the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. The city’s pre-civil war industry included a sugar-beet refinery, brewery, furniture factory, tobacco factory, hosiery works, communications plants, an agribusiness combine, and an automobile industry.
At the end why you should visit Sarajevo?
If you want place with great history, where East meets West charm, where you can eat delicious food, meet friendly people..Sarajevo is definitely “a must” for you.
