When I began university one of my main goals was to travel abroad on an exchange program. In my first year I applied, and was interviewed. I was so excited thinking I was going to get chosen to go to Australia or England. Instead I was asked if I would consider Finland. Honestly, I didn’t even recognize the name. I knew nothing about it, including where in the world it even was. Elated for a chance to go on an adventure I said yes. I barely did much research on the country before my trip. I wasn’t worried though; I just had this feeling that I would love it.
Fast forward months later and I was in a busy and bustling airport saying goodbye to my family with tears in their eyes.
It took three plane rides and many naps but finally I arrived in a tiny airport in what seemed like the middle of nowhere.
On the ride into town I was in awe of how beautiful the drive was. It honestly really reminded me of Canada, with lots of trees and beautiful nature.
Once we arrived at my apartment in the center of downtown Tampere though I did not feel like I was in Canada at all anymore.
I met some friends in my building and we decided to go on some adventures. The first being to Angry Birds Land, which is a small theme park dedicated to the game.
As it turns out the company that created the game is from Finland. It felt so silly that we were running around with kids at this park but we had such a fun time.
Another adventure we took was to Rovaniemi. We rented a couple cars, booked a little cottage, and made the 8 hour drive north. We saw the most breathtaking northern lights, passed by herds of reindeer, and visited Santa Claus. It is a beautiful place.
Although the country took my breath away, so did the people. I am quite a social person and so it was quite obvious to every Finn that I met that I was not from there. Finn’s are known as quiet and shy. Not wanting to start conversations but happy to engage when someone else does. Some of the kindest and beautiful people I met were in Finland. It really took a piece of my heart, and I can not wait until I can go back to visit again. It really should have a place near the top of everyone’s travel wishlist.
