Wuhan, China | I wonder, do anyone doesn’t like to travel, obviously no. When we travel to new destinations, we realize how other people live, their culture their food their uniqueness. Same in my case, belonging to a small yet beautiful country when I traveled to Wuhan city, China I was mesmerized to see their culture, their street foods, their night market, people working late at night to clean the streets.
Let me share with you my travel story from Nepal to Wuhan, China days. Honestly this was my first international flight away from the country to Wuhan, China. Maybe being the first journey, I was a little scared, I don’t know how it feels to be on a plane for the first time or I don’t know how to use the lavatory in case of emergency. Various thoughts like, what if I get lost in the airport, what shall I do? What if I don’t find the gate number for another flight Ganzhou (1-hour transit) to from Wuhan and what if I miss the flight? All these thoughts came as I didn’t know how to speak Chinese and they don’t understand English. Aren’t these thought shameful for 23 yrs. old girl who is educated? Damn, I was so nervous, scared excited all at the same time.
Long story short, I was in China for my educational purpose at Wuhan University and I was selected for the program with other 17 candidates all over Nepal, other 17 candidates who were selected were already there and I was the one to travel later due to some circumstances. On September 23rd, I reached Wuhan airport at midnight. All the nervousness turned into excitement when I saw my senior along with the representative from the university. After going back to the hotel, it was almost 2 am, I was so amazed to see the Chinese people cleaning the road at that time. I was warmly welcomed by my seniors and friends. The next morning, I had a meeting with a professor, which was a challenge as the professor knows only a bit of English and don’t understand when I speak but, it went well, he assigned me some job to be done within a week and assigned his Ph.D. student for my reference. To go to the classroom somedays we used to catch the college bus from the college gate and sometimes we used to go on foot. Going to Wuhan University only for 1 month helped me to know their teaching culture, their hard work, research. We visited many laboratories related to water resources, rice research lab, soil testing lab, and many others which I didn’t remember right now. And the days in the college went well and I am grateful for the opportunity.
Besides the University we did travel to many famous places in Wuhan city. I visited Hubei Province Museum, their replicate their history, their culture. Yellow crane tower which is the most famous touristic destination of Hubei province, the Yangtze River bridge, which is the longest bridge in Asia. The sea world, where I saw the different creatures for the very first time. Wuhan Zoo where I saw Lion, Panda, Camel, Zebra, White tiger for the very first time. And Three Gorge Hydroelectric Project is the world largest hydroelectric project to date. The most memorable moment is, walking by the side of East Lake during the dusk which was so peaceful and calming, which I cannot describe in words. Similarly, we went to Han Street which was much more fun at night. There used to the night market, which used to open only after 6 pm and we had to take the metro, we did a lot of shopping which was much cheaper than in Nepal. Clubbing is famous among youth in China, we also went to the club and danced a lot the whole night which was so much fun. Another fun moment was, when we did a bargain with a Chinese shopkeeper using google translator trying to understand what they said, they didn’t get what we say and we didn’t get what they said, at the end shopkeeper being frustrated they gave us the discount of 20 yuan on a dress of 80 yuan.
Now let’s talk about food, oh my god I cannot explain how much I didn’t like the food on my first day. The first day I tried the noodles which were full of Chinese spices and I didn’t like it at all. We always used to go to the same restaurant for lunch around noon and there used to be many stalls as per the choice. As the day passed on, I became a little habitual with the food and started liking it a bit. Now I miss Chinese food sometimes after coming back.
People in China are friendly their working culture and dedication toward work is an example for all of us. Those sleepless nights and funny days in class were some of the best experiences of life. I not only collected the memories but collected amazing friends to cherish for a lifetime. Remembering those days brings back the smile and makes the old days alive. I cannot describe the whole journey within the story but sharing a part gave me a lot of happiness.
Lastly, to remember the journey, the city never sleeps (Wuhan)gave me so much to cherish for my lifetime. I would love to go back again and relive the moment again.
