Kinabalu National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Kinabalu National Park was declared to be Malaysia's first World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 2000. Situated just a couple of hours' drive from the capital city of Kota Kinabalu, this was gazetted as one of the first national parks in Malaysia. The park is home to a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna which still continues to amaze scientists worldwide. Those who seek to conquer the 4095 metre high Mount Kinabalu need to book their places well in advance due to its popularity that draws thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. Cosy bungalows and cabins are available for rent at the park headquarters, as a one-day trip is hardly enough to explore the many wonders around the park. There are guided tours to the botanical garden and also a wide network of forest trails for those who just love to go back to nature.
