Inspire by the popular Hong Kong TVB drama version of Captain of Destiny, I decided to bring my family to visit Cheung Chau, an island reachable within 60 mins by Ferry. Our initial understanding was that its a pretty quiet town with nothing much to explore. However, our perception started to change when we joined a almost full ferryload of tourists to Cheung Chau. We reached there around 1pm and settle with a quick lunch at Macdonalds(all time favourite with my kids). Following which we walk to the Cheung Chau Tung Wan beach, along the way many locals and tourists were cycling. That was a pretty good choice as you can tour more places in that hot weather. Beach itself was quite clean with quite a fair bit of tourists around. Our boy had a massive time picking up normal looking shells from the beach, I even joked that maybe some shells we pick up are from the seafood restaurant just opposite.Next towards Cheung Po Tsai cave!
Our Final Destination: Cheung Po Tsai Cave
Quite a milestone achievement for my family, walking about 1.5 hours to the destination. The older folks (our parents) gave up midway due to the walking distance and scorching heat. It is not easy to go down to the cave hole despite having a ladder as it is so tiny, probably the body size of a 6-7 years old kid. There was no railing, thus you need to be extremely careful with the kids. Maybe the olden days pirates were tiny size. If you want to be a daredevil, try going into the hole and probably you will find some treasure or see a lovely cobra♥
How to get there!
- Take MTR ride to Central station or Hong Kong station
- From Central Station, exit from gate A
- Walk towards the direction of this building and lookout for the footbridge
- Go up the footbridge and on the footbridge itself, keep walking on your left hand side, you will see some signboard directing you to “All Ferries”
- Continue walking and you will reach another bridge outside the IFC tower that link you the pier. Your pier for Cheung Chau is at Pier 5. On the way to the pier, you should also see a Ferris wheel.
- There are 2 ticket types for ferry to Cheung Chau, deluxe class (air-condition) or ordinary class. I think ordinary class was already good enough, you can enjoy the sea breeze on the ferry.
- Ticket prices were also very reasonable and payable via Octopus card
- And here we are – Cheung Chau!
Side Tips!
If you are too tired after exploring the Cheung Po Tsai cave, you may want to consider taking the fishing boat back to the ferry terminal with little charges
At the same time, our son got himself a pretty seashell, he is overwhelmed!
By evening, we hop on a Fast Ferry and reached Central in around 30 minutes time. Do note that there is Ordinary & Fast Ferry service to Central. Journey time for the former takes about 60 minutes while the latter takes about 30 minutes. Picture shows ferry time and schedules.
